We are living in stressful times. Whether you define yourself as a Millennial or Gen Zer, your life feels like it’s in constant disarray. Daily, we are bombarded by political “breaking news.” Stories hit our collective minds — war, famine, crime, global climate change, social unrest, disease, incivility, and political divisiveness – delivered non-stop via Tik Tok, Instagram, X, Facebook, and whatever other social medium you’re addicted to. (It turns out that doom scrolling is not very helpful for maintaining mental health and well-being.)
What makes us happy then? Is it money, power, fame, stuff, and more stuff? Surely Elon, Jeff, Mark, and Donald are not role models for attaining a blissful existence.
What then? It turns out that life balance consisting of autonomy and competence, along with satisfying relationships, being comfortable with one’s income, and having a life purpose are the keys to happiness. Also important are friends, family, faith — and wait for it — work. Work can be a happy place when there is an intentional culture promoting mental health and well-being. How do you get there?
How does all this apply to the workplace? Looking at the workplace with a POE Framework helps. POE stands for Psychosocial, Organizational, and Environmental levers employers have to create a healthy and safe company culture. Add fun, and work becomes a fulfilling life experience, and of course, a way to pay bills.
